Workshops, Teach-Ins and Screenings

Are you interested in learning more about remix from a youth cultural and educational perspective?

Good news - FURI is on tour- not only locally but nationally as well. Youth members of our speakers bureau are available to come to schools and colleges, conferences, panels, festivals and other public forums to present examples of remix videos by youth, including their own, and speak about how they represent Fair Use. Our youth engage audiences in discussions about the essential questions of ethics, piracy, copyright, fair use and youth communications rights. We also lead hands-on Remix Workshops for teachers, youth media groups and community organizations.

Our presentations are tailored to meet your specific time frames and issue interests. For example, here is a sampling of what we can do.

BRING FURI TO YOUR DOMAIN

Lecture/Screening: Building a Critical Culture with Political Remix Video

Presented by: Jonathan McIntosh
If there is an expert on the emerging field of political video remix, it is Jonathan McIntosh. This two-hour screening/lecture is similar to those he has presented at 2008 Ars Electronica in Linz Austria and at the 2008 DIY Video Summit in Los Angeles. Jonathan presents examples of his own work, those he has unearthed from the online landscape (culled from countless hours of online research) and those produced by youth under his instruction at FURI. He discusses the social, political, historical and technological context of remix culture and how it relates to contemporary media art, activism and education. Youth participants from FURI are also available to accompany Jonathan to discuss remix as a cultural right of youth. (Best suited for colleges and public art events)

Class Presentation: We are FURi(ous): Mixing and Mashing Our Way to a Freer Youth Culture

In this highly interactive and engaging presentation, youth participants from the Fair Use Remix Institute speak to high school teens about piracy, copyright law, fair use and video remix using their own works as examples. This presentation aims to inform youth of the importance of understanding and participating in the important media policy debates that affect their communication rights as youth. We also inform teens how to get media educated and learn to use new technologies for improving their communities and fighting for social justice. (Suited for high schools, social justice and after-school youth programs

Workshop: Using Youth Remix Culture to Teach Critical Media Analysis

Open Youth Networks Director and former high school media arts teacher, Mindy Faber leads this hands-on, interactive workshop for educators and teaching artists. In this cooperative professional development environment, teachers learn how to harness the power of remix as a learning tool for building media literacy and social awareness. Workshop participants learn easy teacher-friendly activities that allow students to produce their own remixes in class using online mixing tools. Discussion guides and tool kits listing dozens of useful resources and videos are included. (Suited for teachers, youth workers and teaching artists.
