Ameenah/Meenah

Yo! My name is Ameenah Nefertiti Muhammad and I am 18 years old. I was born and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago but I still like to refer to myself as a Chicagoan :) I am the youngest of six children and I have 8 nieces\nephews and one great nephew who was born 3 short weeks ago. I have been involved with YouthLab for the last year and it has opened countless doors for me. After becoming involved with YouthLab I have had the opportunity to start working on documentaries with other organizations. In the last year I have helped with the development of films from IMAN and AYWA ( Alliance of Young Women Activists). This fall I will entering the University of Illinois at Chicago with a major in biological science. After two to three years of work I will then move to Cuba to attend Medical school at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana. I made this choice because Cuba produces the largest amount of doctors worldwide and the doctors are trained to practice medicine to truly help people and not just for the money. My experiance with filmmaking will help me document my journey through life because I have plans to do so much.

Peace

I participated in YouthLAB 2007 as a student and I am now participating in YouthLAB 2008 as a student and peer leader. I hope to make remixes that address global corporatism and the biases and innaccuracies from news outlets such as Fox. I also want to use remix in my work for social and enviromental justice.

Martin “Xavi” Macias Jr.

Xavi

Martin Macias Jr. likes to be called Xavi, pronounced “Ch-a-vi” (with the Basque “x” from northern Spain) not because he is an avid fan of linguistics but because the name starts with an “x” and thats just cool. Xavi is a lot of things but he is primarily a multimedia artist, activist, radio journalist, and other weird things like beer vendor and chicken wing enthusiast (yes, that’s a real job). His focus is on health and the environment but is also a media activist. He is also the host of a news/talk show called First Voice that airs on WRTE Radio Arte 90.5FM. More info on Radio Arte and First Voice here. Xavi’s video work has been screened at film festivals and is part of an art installation. His audio commentary was aired on NPR with the help of Youth Radio in New York. He will also be representing youth at this years Democratic Convention in Denver.

Prisca

Prisca

I am a high school student, who lives in Minnesota and lives for art, social activism/organizing, and journalism. My hope in joining FURI is to combine as many of these interests as possible. While being involved in a local school group, I began a search to empower others, and myself, through creating peace in the community. I feel that being a part of FURI will let me reach other people in a way that I hadn’t (or couldn’t) before using things like videos, which are a daily part of many people’s lives. Editing and creating video is a very new experience, and I am excited!
